1991-1999

Since 1991, the Malta Triathlon Association has lobbied for the inclusion of Triathlon in the GSSE. However, when at the 1999 Liechtenstein Games it was announced that the 2003 Games had been awarded to Malta, the MTA efforts to include Triathlon in the Games of the Small States of Europe became truly focused and determined.

2000

MALTA

On the 21st of May 2000, the first Triathlon Championships of the Small States of Europe, called the COCA COLA May Olympic Challenge, was held. It was an Olympic Distance and it was non-drafting. The National Teams of Cyprus, Luxembourg and Malta took part.

2001

MALTA

The second edition of the Triathlon Championships of the Small States of Europe, called the EASYLINE Triathlon, took place on the 20th of May 2001. The National Teams of Cyprus, Luxembourg, Monaco and Malta took part. Race was Non Drafting. By the end of May 2001, the Malta Olympic Committee informed the Malta Triathlon Association that Triathlon, despite being short-listed, would not feature in the 2003 Malta Games.

2002

MALTA

In the third Triathlon Championships of the Small States of Europe (TCSSE), twenty-eight triathletes from Luxembourg, Monaco, Cyprus and Malta took part. Race was Non Drafting.

2003

MALTA

Fourth edition. The TCSSE is officially recognized by the ITU and ETU, and International Ranking Points, counting for the World Championships and the Olympics, are granted to the winners. Thirty athletes from Luxembourg, Monaco, Cyprus & Malta took part. From this year on, all TCSSE were Draft Legal.

2004

CYPRUS

Fifth edition. Cyprus took over the organization of the TCSSE.  The Race was held in Limassol and 23 athletes from Luxembourg, Monaco, Malta & Cyprus took part.

2005

LUXEMBOURG

Sixth edition. The TCSSE moves to Luxembourg, with the Race being held in Remerschen. For the first time, Liechtenstein joined the TCSSE. Forty-eight athletes from Cyprus, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Malta & Luxembourg took part.

2006

MALTA

Seventh Edition. The TCSSE returns to its origins, with the Race being held, as in all the previous editions in Malta, at Salina Bay. Twenty-four athletes from Luxembourg, Cyprus, Monaco, Liechtenstein and Malta took part. The ITU Technical Delegate, Mr. Enrique Quesada, who was present for the TUSSE Congress, made it clear that if the TCSSE wanted to continue qualifying for ITU & ETU Ranking Points, then the organizers would have to open the Race to all comers. In the meantime, at the Sportivi Nazzjonali Contest, organized by the Maltese Sportswriters Association, the TCSSE was voted the Number One International Event held locally throughout 2006.

2007

CYPRUS

Eighth Edition. The TCSSE moves again to Cyprus and makes a leap forward in terms of quality and quantity. As had been decided the year before, the TCSSE was opened to all nationalities and many athletes, particularly from Russia, the Ukraine, Greece etc. took advantage of this offer to take part. In all there were 78 athletes from about 20 countries. Thirty-one athletes from the TCSSE pool (Luxembourg, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Malta & Cyprus) participated.

2008

LUXEMBOURG

Ninth Edition. Forty-eight athletes from 5 of the 8 States of the Small States of Europe took part in the 9th edition of the TCSSE held in Weiswampach, Luxembourg on Sunday 24th August. Despite the strong presence from the home country in terms of both quality and quantity, it was Herve Banti from Monaco who won the Race in a time of 1hr:54m:56s; the Women’s Race was won by Myriam Reuland from Luxembourg in 2hrs:36m:38s. The Race was held on the last day of the Beijing Olympics and any International Points gained by the athletes will count for the 2012 London Olympics.

2009

MALTA

Tenth Edition. The Maltese organizers decided to forfeit ITU & ETU ranking points for the Race as they were not in a position to organize an international race.

Thirty-nine athletes took part in the 2009 TCSSE which was held on Sunday 10th May at Salina Bay, Malta. Athletes came from Malta (22), Monaco (3), Luxembourg (7), Cyprus (4) and Liechtenstein (3). Race was won by Herve Banti (MON) in 01:56:06 and Danica Spiteri (MLT) in 02:24:31.

2010

LIECHTENSTEIN

Eleventh Edition. The 11th Edition of the TCSSE was held in the Principality of Liechtenstein on the 21st and 22nd August. For the first time since these Championships have been held, a Mixed Relay Team Event (Man-Woman-Man) over the distance of S:200m; B: 2km: R:1km, was held. Seven Teams took part with the Maltese Team (Mark Zammit – Danica Bonello Spiteri – Dermot Galea) winning the Event.

Athletes from 5 of the GSSE States took part: Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, San Marino, Cyprus and Malta. Monaco, who has been participating in these Games since 2003, were absent. This disappointment was partly alleviated by the presence, for the first time, of athletes from San Marino.

2011

CYPRUS

Twelfth Edition. Cyprus hosted TCSSE on the 27th March as part of a wider Triathlon Race which included professional Triathletes from Russia, Greece and other countries. Forty-one athletes from the TCSSE countries took part. For the first time, Malta won the Men’s Race thanks to Mark Zammit who finished in 2:06:02. Danica Bonello Spiteri finished 3rd. The Maltese Team consisted also of: Marica Micallef, Keith Galea, Fabio Spiteri and George Vella. No Team Event was held. Athletes from 4 of the 8 States were represented: Cyprus (28), Malta (6), Liechtenstein (2) and Monaco (5).
